A Day in Molly’s Life:

5:15am-5:35am – Wake Up; “I put my cell phone alarm on loud and it has to be across the room from me to make sure I actually get out of bed to turn it off. Get my gym clothes on. Brush my teeth quick and have some multivitamins – Vitafusion Multivites Gummy Vitamins and allergy pills because I get sinus infections at the drop of a hat.”

5:40am-6:30am – “Go down to the gym in my building and start to wake up by turning the speed up on the treadmill.”

6:30am-7:00am – “Shower and get dressed as quickly as I can. I have to lay out my clothes the night before so it speeds up the process a little bit. I usually wear a suit or a dress everyday. Not many ways to make a suit look “cute” and could never quite figure out how the J. Crew models made it look so fashionable in the catalogues.”

Products: “I love any and all product and I usually have a lot of things in my rotation but my most recent obsession is my Clarisonic that I got for Christmas – I have never had such clear and smooth skin. I usually do it once or twice a day depending on if I have charged it the night before but its my favorite and I would recommend it to everyone!  In the shower I use Biolage shampoo and conditioner but I like to buy small bottles because I like switching up the brand.  In my opinion the best body wash is Aveeno body wash in “calming lavender”.  Neutrogena naturals fresh cleaning and make up remover (in the morning) and Trish McEvoy face wash (at night).  Also swear by Ole Henriksen “Ultimate Eye Lift Eye Gel Roll on“, Ole Henriksen, “Truth Serum” and Origins “A Perfect World“. I switch up my body cream daily, but some of my favorites are: Laura Mercier in “Fresh Fig“, Clarins “Moisture Rich Body Lotion“.

7:05am –  “Head out the door to grab the 1 Train to the 2 Train and then either the PATH to Exchange Place or the Ferry from World Financial Center to Paula’s Hook. I’ve been taking the ferry lately because its been such a nice way to start the day on a boat. Usually grab an iced coffee at a place along the way and maybe a veggie drink if I really need to wake up.”

8:00am – “Sit down at my desk – we don’t have assigned seats at work so I try to switch it up and pick a new seat every day.”

8:00am-8:25am – “I eat breakfast at my desk – usually a yogurt from home and I check emails.”

8:30am-9:30am – Internal Meeting

9:30am-10:30am – Check emails

11:00am-12:00pm – “Jump back on the ferry to Manhattan for a meeting at one of our properties to discuss marketing and PR opportunities.”

12:30pm – “Head back to Jersey City and pick a new seat again…”

12:45pm-1:00pm – “Go down to the cafeteria and grab a salad and go back up and eat at my desk.”

1:00pm-6:30/7:00pm – “Respond to emails and usually have a couple smaller internal meetings or conference calls.”

7:00pm – “Head home and pick up something for dinner along the way.”

8:00pm – “Get home eat, watch NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams”

9:30pm/10:00pm – HIT THE HAY; “Before bed I usually put on Ole Henriksen “Truth Serum” I also like Lancome “Genefique” serum and before bed and in the winter months twice a week I will put on Origins “Drink Up Intensive“, L’Occitane hand cream “Mango flower“, Carmax lip balm, and Ole Henriksen “Ultimate Eye Lift“.  In Sephora I typically gravitate to any product that says “lift, tighten or smooth”.” – AMEN SISTER!

Thanks Mol!  Now I realize why we are such good friends… product obsessed and Mexican food lovers.  Even after living with you for so many years, I still find this interesting!  I love your tendency to mix things up.  After all, change leads to happiness!  (Has anyone seen the Happy Movie? So good!)  Even things as little as mixing up moisturizer is something worth trying!  Do it peops!  Also, I must say, for all of you thinking What?! She’s up at 5:30am everyday to workout? Mol is one of the most disciplined people I have ever known and is definitely a great example for the rest of us!  As Ben Franklin puts it, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a [wo]man healthy, wealthy and wise.”  I need to start repeating that one in the morning as I hit snooze

How was everyone’s weekends?!  This is my last week as a 26 year old and I can’t really believe it!

XOXO

PS – Mol is my bestie from the famous Wedding of the Year

A Day in the Life: Kelly

Kelly

Kelly
Age: 26
Current City:  Upper East Side, NYC
Job:  High School Literature and Writing teacher for students diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, and Aspergers
Fave food: “So many.  Kale, Brie, and everything bagels, to name a few.”
Favorite Book: “Right now, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera and J.D. Salinger’s Nine Stories are at the top of my list – I can’t resist a twisted love story!”
Drink of Choice: “Black coffee in the morning and the afternoon, a sassy Cabernet or Malbec in the evening.”
Beauty Secret: “I’ve recently become obsessed with Elixirs and Hydrolats – I bring them to work – a quick spray in the afternoon makes all the difference.  Caudalie Elixir is my favorite.  Also, I’ve been mixing face serums with my face cream – I find that the combination absorbs into my skin more effectively.”
Ideal date: “Love dates.  But, I’m a 75-year old woman at heart, so I have to admit that my favorite date is at home, with a bottle of win, a Rom-com (if it’s my turn to pick) and food made by my favorite in-house chef, my 75 year-old companion.” – let me clarify he is not actually 75!
Favorite NYC Spots: “Although I’ve worked in the city for 5 years, I still feel new to all the kitschy-cool spots NYC has to offer – however, I’m forever in love with Grounded, The Blind Tiger, Westville, Extra Virgin, Candle 79, Caravan of Dreams, Doma, Taim, Union Square Farmer’s Market, The Strand and Pippin(“for browsing”)”

A DAY IN KELLY’S LIFE

6:35am – Wake up, jump in shower; Products: Caudalie Exfoliating Face Scrub, Caudalie foaming cleanser, Dr. Hauschka’s cream cleanser (“to bring some moisture back to the face”), L’Occtaine’s Verbena Shower Gel, “I recently treated myself to Kiehl’s Argan Conditioner—it helps to tame my unruly mane.”

6:45am – Jump out of shower, use SkinCeuticals conditioning toner, Onurth’s Neroli or Rose Hydrolat, Avene light moisturizing cream with a few drops of Onurth’s face serum (or Caudalie face serum), and Avene eye cream; For make-up, Laura Mercier’s mineral powder, NARS’ Blush in Orgasm or Maui, and Maybelline Great Lash Mascara.

6:50am – Dress; “I have yet to perfect the professional teacher look, though I’ve improved over the years (my students confronted me about my white New Balance sneaks, boot-cut jeans, and tiny teal backpack (that donned my initials, obviously) during my first year—such outfits aren’t cut out for the big city, apparently). I try to match jeans and cords of all colors with boots—some days call for a button down, others an oversized t or sweater, and others a blazer (I try to save the blazers for all-business Mondays or serious test-taking days).” – I love this!  Talk about teacher chic.

7:00am – “Attempt to make a quick breakfast—most days it’s toast with avocado. If I’m feeling brave, I’ll try to whip up a smoothie—if I’m running late, it’s a croissant at Petite Abeille, though I’m trying to cut those out in 2013…not going to happen.”

7:10am – “Out the door to try and catch a 7:20ish train!”

7:30am/7:40 – “Arrive at school. Make any last minute changes to lesson plans and necessary photocopies that I didn’t make the day before.”

8:00am – “My first and second period class arrives and prepares for an exciting day of high school!”

8:15am – “Start teaching my 9th graders! We’re reading The Hobbit, so early morning is spent in middle earth!”

9:45am – “Classes change: My first class of 11th and 12th graders arrive, so excited, as usual.”

11:15am-1:25pm – Lunch/prep periods; “I usually use this time to meet with students about papers/outstanding assignments/to prepare for the rest of the week. Since all of my classes are reading different novels, I never feel like I’m caught up. Most days I bring lunch to avoid going out, but I usually take a couple of minutes to grab a coffee across the street— my new favorite spots include Haven and The Commons in Chelsea.”

1:30pm – “My final class—11th and 12th graders—arrive, also very excited. We’re currently reading Kafka’s The Metamorphosis so everyone has been buggin’.”

3:00pm – Dismissed!

3:00pm-5:00pm – “I tutor two different students right after school for one-hour sessions—usually for the SATs or homework help.”

5:00pm-6:30pm – Prepare for the next day, grade papers and tests, catch up on e-mails, update student folders

6:30ish – Teacher dismissed!

7:00pm-9:30pm – Eat, drink, and watch an HBO/Showtime series show; “Dinner is simple—usually a salad, some cooked vegetable, always some cheese, and, if I’m in an over-achieving mood, a pasta/rice dish. Wine is always present. I’m a big fan of Breaking Bad (AMC!), Workaholics, Girls (Jan 13th!), and Homeland—the Wire instigated the series obsession—I blame Omar Little.”

9:30pm-11:30pm: “Shower, read, and work on lesson plans/grading. My routine at night is nearly identical to the morning, with the exception (very recently) of the Clarisonic, which Santa brought this year. Every few nights I also try to use Dr. Dennis Gross’s Daily face peels—though, these are pricey, so I don’t always have them in stock. I’m liberal with the eye cream at night.” – You’re a smart woman, Kel.

12:00am: Lights out.

Thanks Kelly!  You are hilarious.  I am so inspired by you and I love the honesty!  11th and 12th graders?  You must have the patience of a Saint!   And just another amazing teacher shaping the future!  In other news, my eyes are opened to so many new products!  I thought I was the product junkie!  I love seeing how varied everyone’s days are.  Keep rockin’ those white New Balances girlfriend!

How is everyone’s weeks going?

XOXO

A DAY IN KATE’S LIFE

7:08am – Alarm goes off.  Depending on the night before, hit snooze anywhere from one to seven times.

8:00am – Get out of bed; Splash freezing water on my face; Brush teeth; Shower; Blow dry, straighten or curl hair (“the Sultra has changed my life”); Turn on radio “92.3 fm to hear the latest pop hits and mentally pregame for my day”; “Stare at my closet for 30 seconds.  Feeling uninspired, I pick up a top I wore just six days ago. I pull it out of the dry cleaning bag and throw it on.”; Apply makeup (Dior Black Out mascara, NARS Laguna bronzer, Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in black, “Carmex for the puckers”).

8:55am – Slip on a pair of boots or ballet flats (“loving Target patent leather right now and they’re only $14.99”); Grab a scarf (“my favorite accessory”) and purse, wake up roommates, and run out the door “usually without my Metrocard”; Drop off bag of laundry/dry cleaning; Run into the bodega below apartment to grab a coffee and a yellow apple;  Walk to the subway enjoying some “fresh air”.

9:00am – Snag a seat on the E train and put on headphones (“current playlist includes some Ellie Goulding,  Of Monsters and Men, TSwift, The Emersons, Rihanna”); “The 17-minute subway ride consists of constant awkward eye contact with everyone within 10 feet and some random thoughts: Did I turn off my hair straightener? Don’t forget to respond to that email. Look at that cute guy across the way. Is he straight? I wonder if he’s single? Is he looking at me? Oh wait, no. He’s looking at the subway map behind me.”

9:17am – Get off subway and make way onto the escalator; “Casually step to the right side of the escalator, lean back and cruise up. Yes, I do not walk up the escalator, I stand to the right and watch all the passersby panting and judging.”

9:20am – Walk to work and call Mom or Dad.

9:30am – Get to work; “Walk into office, take one look at my dead plant and think, don’t forget to water today. Undoubtedly, I forget. Read the day’s top headlines. Check horoscope.  Apply some Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve to keep the hands nice and soft in the wintertime. Sign onto Gchat. Emails. Meeting. Emails. Facebook. Meeting. Gchat. Emails. Meeting.”

12:30pm – Lunch “Love to Eat Fresh at Subway. Veggie Delite (the meat scares me) on 6-inch whole wheat. Sun Chips. Huge diet fountain soda (dreading Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on large sodas). And all for just $7.08. Love a good bargain.”

12:45pm – “Eat Fresh back at desk.”

1:00-4:00pm – “Facebook. Gchat. Emails. Meeting. Gchat. Emails. Meeting. Mobile Upload from the weekend. Emails. Gchat. Emails. Meeting. Yell at Facebook newsfeed for not refreshing often enough.”

4:00pm – Look out the window to check out the line at Dunkin Donuts “Perfect, looks like the after-school crowd has cleared out.”; Head outside for some “fresh air” and large coffee with skim.

5:00pm – Cram to finish up work for the day, “Wish Facebook and Gchat were banned in my office.  How will I get everything done before happy hour?”

7:00pm – Happy hour, “Favorite spot near my office is Bar Vetro ($4 for a mini carafe of wine, doesn’t get better in NYC).”

8:15pm – Out to dinner with friends or order delivery “since I can’t remember the last time I went grocery shopping”; “Fridge currently has a stick of butter, 17 Bud Lights, 4 Keystones and a jar of salsa and unfortunately, I can’t make a meal out of that.”; If takeout, “Call 12 Chairs, my favorite neighborhood restaurant. Why don’t I have their number saved already?” order arugula or Greek salad.

8:30 – 11:00pm – “Unwind for the day with my roommates, enjoying televisions finest: The Voice, Bachelor/Bachelorette, Real Housewives (all of them), Real World/Road Rules Challenge (yes, those are still on) and Revenge, just to name a few.”

11:00pm – Brush teeth; Clarisonic; Bedtime

Thanks Kate!  I LOVE your honesty!  And the dead plant in your photo made me laugh out loud.  Not all of us have time to cook (myself included) so it’s nice to get a raw perspective on life in NYC.  For a lot of us, work takes over most of our lives, so with the little free time we have, we do not want to spend it at the grocery store.  Finding your go-to takeout spot can be very important!  And the more Day in the Life posts I put up, the more I realize how popular reality TV is!  I think it’s remained a constant with everyone featured!  I also must point out and re-emphasize how great NARS Laguna bronzer is!  Another repeating pattern amongst the ladies of South of Main!  Gals after my own heart!

It’s Monday!  And it’s one of my besties birthdays, happy birthday Lib!  Love you!  We’re going here tonight to celebrate – can’t wait!

XOXO

My go to is a turkey sandwich from Blake & Todd with tomato, cucumber, AVOCADO and LOTS of honey mustard, can’t get enough of that stuff. I used to do a lot of afternoon snacking but I’m super busy in my new role so sadly that’s not really an option anymore.”

6:15pm – Start to wrap up at work, send a few final emails, check in with the team to see if anyone needs any last minute help

6:25pm – Change into gym clothes “hot pink Nike sneakers, Lululemon pants, grimey t-shirt (I should grow up and start wearing nice work-out tops but I love a good beat-up tee), usually Dartmouth, Holy Cross or something from home like a bar t-shirt – classy, right? SoulCycle sweatshirt. And no, I don’t wear socks.”  – Abbs, the socks you’ve got to work on!

6:30pm – Walk to the gym (Abb’s gym of choice: NY Health and Racquet) and SoulCycle on Thursdays (“Fave teacher is Danny, try him out, he’s amaze.”)

7:00pm –  Gym (either elliptical or treadmill)

8:00pm – Walk home every day (Abby’s favorite part of the day); home or mani/pedi (“Currently rocking OPI Lincoln Park After Dark”); Shower to rinse off, wash face with St. Ives and “steal some more body wash”

8:15pm –  Change into another old t-shirt, boxers and have dinner on the couch with the roommates; Dinner: typically a veggie burger, chick peas with soy sauce (“try it, it’s so good”), cheese and crackers, or pasta with Vodka Sauce, always followed by Cool Whip (“an all time fave”) or a trip to Tasti-Delight (“there is one dangerously close to our apartment”) for coconut fro-yo (shocker!); “lots of really classy television” like Gossip Girl, Criminal Minds, Real Housewives (“not by choice but one of the roommates is addicted”), Sex and the City etc.

Product Junkie

Man do I love my products!  While I try to branch out by buying different eyeshadow colors, lipsticks, etc., I tend to stick with the same makeup routine day after day, but I think it’s worth sharing!  So here are my beauty go-tos:

Sense a theme here?

1. NARS Corfu cream shadow, NARS Red Square lip pencil

2. Essie nail polish in Clam Bake

3. NARS eye liner in Kyoto, NARS bronzer in Laguna (this is a MUST BUY – works on almost everyone), NARS blush in Orgasm, Great Lash Mascara in Blackest Black (oldie but a goodie), NARS eyeshadow primer, NARS Earth Angel eyeshadow

I have green eyes and medium skin, but the NARS Laguna bronzer and Orgasm blush seem to be universally flattering (when experimenting on my friends).  The Kyoto eye liner is a great alternative to basic black or brown.  Kyoto is a green color with hints of gold and looks great on all eyes but especially green, hazel and brown.  NARS Earth Angel eyeshadow duo is by far my fave of the eyeshadow duos.  The earthy tones bring out the color of your eyes and can be worn for day or night.  To make sure the shadow lasts all day and night I use the NARS eyeshadow primer beforehand, which helps to avoid creasing and enhances the color of the shadow.  When it comes to mascara, I don’t care what people say – I am sticking to Great Lash!  I really don’t think any other mascara compares and I have been using it since highschool and it hasn’t done me wrong!  Save the $20 and go to CVS.  For night, I usually dab NARS Corfu, a gold shimmery cream shadow, on my inner eyes for a little bling and if I’m feeling really adventurous, I skip the Corfu and do a red lip with the NARS Red Square pencil.

While the above stays relatively stable, my lotions and potions tend to vary, and I love to exchange knowledge with fellow junkies.  So tell me, what is your day and nighttime routine in the lotions and potions department!?  Here are my top picks:

In order:  Fash wash, toner, eye cream, vitamin C serum, anti-aging serum, tinted moisturizer, anti-aging moisturizer, night lotion

I am always surprised by the number of people who don’t use lotion.  I might be an extreme case,  but I have been using lotion ever since I was little.  Every morning, I lather up head to toe and if I don’t my skin feels tight and uncomfortable.  Maybe I’m crazy, but I have dry skin and a serious fear of getting wrinkles (SPF4 for most of my life hasn’t paid off…should’ve listened to my mom).  SO because of these factors, I have a love for trying new products and figuring out which ones work best.  Don’t get me wrong, I do not use all of the above on a daily basis, but when I do, I swear I look ten years younger…

JUSTTT kidding.  But they really do help!  My daily routine is typically wake up, workout, shower/wash face, then apply toner with cotton pads (new addition), Ole-Henriksen serum and Origins tinted lotion (or regular lotion if I don’t want any coverup).  Because my skin is dry, the Origins woman suggested this “treatment lotion” toner, which not only brings your PH balance back to normal, but also retains moisture which makes your regular serum and moisturizers work better.  I had never used toner until about a week ago, but I really have noticed a difference in my skin and the glow it gives you, which is always appreciated as the tan starts to fade (at a rapid pace).  The Ole-Henriksen serum is a collagen boosting product, which means it noticeably fills fine lines and wrinkles and also helps your lotion and makeup absorb and stay put.  As an alternative, the Skinceuticals vitamin C and CE Ferulic serums do unbelievable things to your skin in terms of tightening, brightening and filling lines, but I have been milking a trial size for a while now because they are a bit expensive (hence the reason it’s not in my daily routine).  However, if you’re willing to dish out the dough, I think Skinceuticals is definitely worth every penny!  Next on the list, the Origins VitaZing lotion with Mangosteen.  Ohhh, the love I have for this little white tube of perfection.  I have tried other tinted moisturizers, like the famous Laura Mercier version, but for some reason could not find a match with my skin (maybe it’s the freckles).  Finally, when I tried a sample of this Origins version, I nearly cried tears of joy.   The lotion is very light but hydrating and appears off-white with little brown microbeads in your palm, but then somehow blends in and finds the perfect tone to match your skin.   I don’t know how they do it.  I don’t ask any questions.  But I am telling you, you need to go out and buy this product!  Now I sound like a used car salesman… but seriously, trust me on this one!  It makes skin look even and polished without looking cakey or streaked.  It also makes your bronzer and makeup look better.

Allure

Moving onnnn, when I don’t want any “tint” I use the Origins Perfect World lotion, which literally feels like a cold mud facial and has SPF 25 to boot.  The texture is so soothing it brings a smile to my face and the scent (as with most Origins products) is out of this world (pun intended).  When it comes to eye cream, I always tend to forget to put it on, but when I do, I love the Kiehl’s avocado based cream, for it’s refreshing, dewy formula, which is delicate enough for your sensitive eye area but still packs a punch (to get rid of oncoming wrinkles).  Last but certainly not least, NIGHT-A-MINS!  The smell, is again – delectable, and the product moisturizes and recovers like no other.   You definitely shouldn’t use this if you have oily skin, but for combination or dry skin it’s a must have!

Now that I have bored you with every detail of my daily skin regimens (can you tell this topic excites me?), tell me what you do on a daily basis?  What are your top makeup and lotion finds?  Where do you shop for your makeup and skin care?

XOXO

PS – While we’re on the subject, I am in the market for a new perfume – any suggestions?
