A Day in the Life: Mary Kate

Mary Kate

MKD

Current City: Manhasset, New York
Job: Pediatric Nurse, “Currently not working while waiting for baby Miller to arrive, hopefully I will go back in the fall but we will see!”
Fave Food: Pizza “Especially pregnant, apparently I have been eating too much of it because when I went to pay over the phone at Pottery Barn for the babies glider I said “I’d like to pay with my pizza!” I meant Visa…MORTIFYING!  I was always more of a salt over sugar girl but this pregnancy I am definitely more of a sugar girl.  I NEED to have something sweet after I eat, I hope that craving stops after the baby arrives I always loved that I didn’t like dessert now I can’t live without it!”
Favorite TV Show: Homeland, Dateline and 48 Hour Mystery, Bachelor/Bachelorette, Housewives and Modern Family
Drink of Choice: “When I am pregnant I like Seltzer with a splash of cranberry or a non alcoholic beer if I am out so I feel like I am drinking- I also just love the taste of beer!  Not pregnant I enjoy Diet Coke with a lemon! Mojito or Red wine!! CANNOT wait for a few Mojitos this summer – watch out!!!!!”
Ideal Date: Dinner and a movie, “Ryan’s (MK’s hubby) not a huge movie goer so we like to get take out and rent a movie on TV too!”
Favorite NYC Spots: “Columbus Circle where we got married, especially around Christmas I love the shops they set up – this year we went for our anniversary (12/17) and we got hot chocolate and shopped around it was perfect!  There are hundreds of favs though – the entire city is cool!  I lived there for 5 years out of college, sometimes I miss it, but I am definitely more a suburbs gal!  I mostly just miss my girlfriends being so close.  We go to visit quite a bit and that’s perfect for me!”
Favorite Department Store: Bloomies!
Favorite Scent: Kiehl’s Musk – the spray and the oil!
Favorite breakfast food: eggs or a bagel with cream cheese “bagels give me massive heartburn pregnant though…along with EVERYTHING else!”
Current Nail Polish: Topless and Barefoot “I do not recommend…makes my nails look dirty like the ink on my jeans has rubbed off on them or something!”

A DAY IN MARY KATE’S LIFE

8:00am – Wake up…

8:00am-8:25am – “Get out of bed, sometimes it takes a while with this big ol’ belly!”; Products: “I am a product freak!! I love creams, I take after my Mom!  Guinot is my favorite brand.  I love the face wash it’s smells good and makes your skin so smooth- I follow it with Guinot toner and then Guinot bioxygene moisturizer – simply fantastic!”  CeraVe moisturizer for my body (“they make an am/pm cream for the face too”), Vaseline aloe fresh moisturizing body gel,  Neutrogena oil-free eye makeup remover, Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner, NARS tinted moisturizer, Pantene Pro-V “for shampoo and conditioner but I change it up every time”, Dove body wash “right now but again I change my body wash up every time I go to the store too – much more fun that way new bottles and new scents they all seem to do the same for my hair and skin”, Venus razors

8:30am-9:30am – Go downstairs, “Ryan will usually make me breakfast unless I make cereal, I am going to miss that when he deploys :( We discuss what task is on the agenda for the day.  We are currently dealing with heat issues.  We are getting a whole new system Feb 7th they have to tear up the ceiling in the basement that we just redid!”

9:30am-10:30am – “I used to go to SoulCycle every Tuesday/Thursday at this time but at 36 weeks I had to stop – SoulCycle ROCKS but the ab work out part was getting too difficult with my bump – I’m proud I made it so far…so I try to walk or do something physical during this time – Wednesday/Friday I go to my trainer at this point I just go to get my blood flowing and see if I can squat this baby out!  I tried to keep in shape this pregnancy – they say it’s good for the baby, it makes labor easier and it helps you take the weight off quicker after you give birth- we shall see!”

11:00am-12:00pm – “Shower after my workout or run errands for whatever it is we are doing for the day.  Lately it has just been organizing the house (who knew how long this would take?), getting our paperwork squared away, washing the baby clothes, setting up baby things and trying to get our life squared away before Ryan leaves and we have our sweet baby!  We have furniture delivered almost everyday, it’s so fun and exciting.  Since we just moved and unpacked (mostly) we move things around ALL the time still – it’s like a game figuring out where everything should go!”

12:30pm – Lunch “It’s so nice to have Ryan home to share this time before he deploys we have really been able to enjoy each others company before the baby arrives!”

1:00pm-6:30pm – Finish up work for the day and run errands, “My Mom and I are always out buying something for the house while Ryan is home doing the handyman work! Sometimes I sneak in a nap – not as often as I should be at this point – there is just so much I can be doing!  Being pregnant is funny it’s the kind of tired that you physically CANNOT keep your eyes open even if you try, at least not me!”

7:00pm – “Plan on what to do for dinner!  I feel bad I haven’t cooked in the new house yet.  I’m getting used to Ryan cooking for me…going to be a hard habit to break!”

8:00pm –  Watch TV with Ryan; check bills and e-mails and do the dishes or laundry

9:30pm/10:00pm – Bed; “I take my prenatal vitamins, I bring up two bottles of water for my bedside – I am so thirsty at night! I use my Guinot products or Neutrogena towelettes (if it’s a lazy night) and brush my teeth!  I usually do not fall asleep until 11 or 12 baby Miller just sits on my bladder so I am up almost every hour at night, not as easy to sleep anymore – turning from side to side is a project! ”

Thanks Mary Kate!  Again, so many new products I haven’t heard of!   It is such an exciting time and so amazing to hear about all of the prep that goes into having a baby.  MK is one of an incredible family of 5 kids with more extended family than I can keep track of!  Baby Miller will be loved by so many and we can’t wait to see if it’s a boy or a girl!  In fact, MK has agreed to do another day in the life post-baby!  It will be so fun to compare schedules pre and post baby!

XOXO
Meg

Downward Doggin’

So I think I have officially caught the Yogi bug.  Ever since my doctor appointment, I started experimenting with a couple of yoga classes and ended up buying a Groupon for one month unlimited at a studio called YogaWorks.  Since I had minimal experience and didn’t know the good from the bad studios, I figured I would try whatever was somewhat close to my apartment and didn’t cost me an arm and a leg.  After trying a few less than impressive studios, YogaWorks was exactly what I had been looking for: a variety of classes from bar to power yoga, people of all levels, a zen studio, approachable instructors and multiple locations all over the city.  While I am usually not one to a) workout after work or b) go to a workout class of any kind, I found myself running out the door of my office every night to try to make whatever class was available at that time.  I am typically a run in the morning type of gal and usually don’t like the restrictions of having to make a class (only exception: SoulCycle), but for some reason, yoga has changed all of that.  Not only did I find myself leaving class more refreshed, I was relaxed, happier and clear-headed.  A yogi miracle!

Just to give you a little anecdote, my boyfriend and I were planning on meeting for dinner after he finished work drinks and I finished a yoga class on the Upper East Side.  After I spent a majority of the day telling him this probably won’t work tonight because “you will get caught at drinks longer than you think” and him encouraging me that was not going to happen and that we would meet at 9pm, I finally gave in.  Be the bigger person, let him win, I thought.  Fast forward to 9pm when my class is finished, I check my phone to find three texts along the lines of  “I’m going to be a little bit late.”.  What was my first thought?  No problem.  Now, fast forward to 45 minutes later and I’m sitting at the bar by myself next to two creepy grown men, while awkwardly checking my phone to avoid having to converse with them.  Still remaining calm all the while.  And finally, at 10pm, that tall drink of water walks in smiling from ear to ear, “I’m so sorry.”  My reaction?  Pure and utter forgiveness.  Not only did I not care, I was extremely happy to see him!  See?  Yoga mind in progress!  HA!  I am only kind of kidding.  But really,  I think everything that they say about yoga is true.  I’m drinking the Kool-Aid people!  It is such a great mind-body exercise with so many benefits short and long-term.  It makes you feel at peace and helps you rid yourself of a racing mind (which I am more than guilty of).  Not to mention it can totally change your bod!  (Fine, I will look like Jennifer Aniston if I have to.)  I hope to be “practicing” for the rest of my life!

Hello, amazing body!

Anyone who thinks “Yoga isn’t for me” should give it a second shot!  Because I was one of those people.  I think it’s about finding the right studio and classes and not being intimidated.  For me I really enjoy the Vinyasa flow style because you don’t stop moving and you don’t hold positions for very long.  The other class which has been really enjoyable is BarWorks, which is a class at YogaWorks very similar to a Bar Method or Physique57 class (for a fraction of the cost).  It’s all about mixing it up!  I have noticed a small difference in my body already and feel so much stronger from only a month of full on commitment!  Grab a friend and give it a whirl if you’re not already addicted!  And who doesn’t want an excuse to buy more Lululemon?

Hope you’re enjoying the long Thanksgiving weekend!  It has been absolutely beautiful in Massachusetts and so relaxing and fun hanging out with my family and friends!  So cliché – but I’m feeling very thankful!

XOXO

My go to is a turkey sandwich from Blake & Todd with tomato, cucumber, AVOCADO and LOTS of honey mustard, can’t get enough of that stuff. A Day in the Life: Emilie

And the moment you’ve all been waiting for………

Juuust kidding.  But like I promised, today I am introducing a weekly feature called “A Day in the Life” which I will publish every Monday going forward.  The feature will illustrate a typical day in the life of a select person.  This person may be another blogger, a close friend, the President – who knows!  The main purpose is to get a glimpse into another’s life and hopefully, you will be unexpectedly entertained (and perhaps inspired).

The idea spurred from a conversation with friends on the differences in people’s daily routines – all the way from what you eat for breakfast down to how you get into bed at night (you’d be surprised how many ways people climb into the sack).  I have always found it interesting to learn about other people, which is probably why I love documentaries and the articles in US Weekly on a celeb’s daily regimen (dare I admit it).  While it’s a fairly simple concept, people’s differences are interesting.  So, with that said, here I give you my first ever “A Day in the Life” post.

Emilie

(pronounced Emily)

Background: my childhood friend of 25 years
Age: 27
Current City:  New York, NY
Hometown:  South Shore of MA
Job:  Finance
Nickname: “EmSull”
Beauty secret:  5-6 bottles of water daily
Favorite food:  anything salty, but mostly chips with hummus and pizza
Ideal date: drinking beer and eating bar food at a local pub then going home to watch a movie (think: Taken) – get in line fellas!
(Wearing: AG Jeans, Anthropologie vest, Frye boots, Ann Taylor sweater, Michele watch, Ray Ban sunglasses)

A DAY IN EMILIE’S LIFE

6:45am – get up and shower

6:55am – splash face with cold water (a morning de-puffer!), brush teeth, get back into bed and check work emails on phone

7:05am – get up, towel dry hair, apply Ole Henriksen serum, Lancome pearl eye cream and Origins tinted moisturizer (on my recommendation!)

7:10am – blow dry & flat iron hair

7:25am – apply makeup (here’s what’s in Em’s makeup bag: Sarra cover up, NARS bronzer in Laguna, Dior shimmer powder in amber diamond, NARS black eye liner, Dior Show mascara, Chanel rouge allure extrait de gloss shade #51)

7:35am – get dressed, grab snack for afternoon (typically: string cheese or cottage cheese)

7:40am – out the door to walk to the subway

8:00am – arrive at work, get a bottle of water and a bowl of cereal from kitchen (Special K, Life or Honey Bunches of Oats), check email

9:00am – get a coffee from the kitchen (Green Mountain hazelnut, black), more work (whatever that entails)

10:30am – handful of almonds or unsalted peanuts (which are kept at her desk)

12:00pm – grab a half-sandwich from Pret-A-Manger: chicken and bacon or chicken mozzarella baguette (because she has a fast metabolism, Emilie prefers to eat several small meals throughout the day – girlfriend, it’s working!)

12:30pm – eat lunch, back to work, consume 3-4 bottles of water

3:00pm – grab a small snack: cottage cheese, string cheese or 100-calorie pack of pretzels

5:00/5:30pm – subway home

5:45pm – arrive home, change into gym clothes and toast a half a whole wheat Arnold sandwich thin with crunchy peanut butter

6:00pm – go to SoulCycle or the gym: use weight machines (leg press, bicep curls, tricep extensions, seated rows) and because Emilie doesn’t like to run, she alternates 2 minutes of walking/3 minutes of running on treadmill for 30 mins

7:00pm – arrive home, hop in the shower

7:30pm – pour a glass of wine (Cabernet in the winter, chardonnay in the summer) and make dinner; dinner typically consists of whole wheat pasta and grilled asparagus (grill asparagus in EVOO until almost brown, once pasta is done, throw the asparagus in the pot and add a little more EVOO, a spoonful of goat cheese and a spoonful of pesto and mix until melted)

8:00pm – hang with the roomies, watch tv (Friends, Modern Family or Nashville) [sidenote #1: EmSull is the biggest Friends fanatic you will ever meet]

9:30pm – have 2 pieces of dark chocolate and clean up kitchen

10:00pm – brush teeth and wash face with Aveeno or Neutrogena microbead cleanser (exfoliate twice a week with Clarins exfoliator), apply Ole Henriksen serum, and Nuskin eye cream

10:15/10:30pm – climb into bed (I wonder how she does it?), check email and apply L’occitane hand cream [sidenote #2: she has the softest hands I’ve ever felt (creepy?), I may have to pick up some of this stuff]

So what did you think?  Even having known Em for 25 years, I find this so interesting!  I love the fact that she has a glass of wine every night to unwind -girl after my own heart.  I’m more of a three square meals a day kind of gal, but I’m thinking maybe I should look into the small meals throughout the day thing.  I have heard it’s a good way to jumpstart your metabolism.  How do your days compare?  Do you tend to be a creature of habit or do you try to mix it up?

Hope you all had nice weekends and a great start to the week!

XOXO
