All Hail!

OrganicCoconutOilCoconut Oil is my new JAM.  Use it on your body as a cheap and highly effective (and all natural, organic, anti-aging, the list goes on…) moisturizer, throw it on your face at night and go to bed smelling like a Mounds Bar, but wake up looking like a million bucks!  Toss is on some sweet potatoes and throw them in the oven.  I am telling you this stuff is the.real.deal.  And I am currently religious about using it anywhere and everywhere.

That’s all for now!

Here You Glow!

Ok, so I don’t know if it comes with the territory of co-habitation or if I am just fully embracing living in Brooklyn, but I have been SO into cooking and holistic health these days … Maybe it’s the thrill of feeding someone besides myself, or just having actual SPACE to cook, but I have really found making homemade meals to be extremely gratifying.  While I am fully against fad dieting, I really love finding ways to improve my health and, along with exercise, diet is the easiest way to do that (something I know you have never heard before).  I think I am somewhat of a foodie, so I don’t like slacking on meals (besides the occasional pb & j – it never fails), so when I found this website that was equal parts healthy, easy to make and full of FLAVA (Did I mention vegan? Which I most definitely AM NOT.) – I was beside myself!  And, where better to share this little gem than right here with you all!  So without further a do, I present you…  Oh She Glows!

Here are a few of my faves that I have whipped up so far…

Creamy Avocado Pasta (I used soba noodles – so easy and delish!)

avocado pasta

No Fail Hummus

Vegan Bowl (Don’t be scared – this thing is GOOD and sure to make you glow!)

And a few more recipes on my to do list…

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough “Blizzard”

(I made this similar recipe recently which was ri-dic-u-lous. I could say I will never eat real icecream again, but I wouldn’t lie to you.)

Green Warrior Smoothie

Carrot Cake Baked Oatmeal (for my carrot cake loving boyfriend)

Can you believe these are VEGAN!?  Trust me you won’t miss your steak and potatoes after you whip up one of these bad boys!

Hope you’re all having a good week!

PS – a couple more healthy and delicious recipes I have made lately… kale and sesame soba noodles with a fried egg, 7 ingredient raw cookie dough bites, flourless peanut butter chunk cookies

Interesting right?  Here are my observations:

1. People tend to be pretty routine when it comes to breakfast.

2. If you don’t eat a lot in the morning you end up eating more later in the day.  As they say, eat your breakfast!

3. Girls are HEALTHY.

4. Those who are veggie lovers… eat a lot of veggies.  Those who are not… lack veggies in their diets.  This may sound obvious, but there doesn’t seem to be an in between.

5. Monday is the healthiest day.

6. Everyone has one “cheat day” whether they plan to or not.

7. Girls like sweets.  Thank GOODNESS I’m not the only one who needs icecream.

8. You’re one of two things: a snacker or a mealer. (Go Team Mealer!)

9. People hit the bottle on Thursdays. (They don’t call it Thirsty Thursdays for nothin’!)

10. Red meat is not high on the priority list for us gals.

What patterns do you see?  Aren’t you impressed with all of their healthy choices!  Go GFs!  I need to get on the barley salad train!  Doesn’t it just sound yummy? It’s amazing how different everyone’s days are!  Not one person has even a remotely similar day to the next.  If we were looking at their outfits I guarantee you could find some (many) parallels. But (!) how interesting that not one person has the same tastes or eating habits as another.  Have you ever thought about that? How do your eating habits compare?  It might be a fun project to track your meals/snacks for the week.  When talking to my friends a lot of them said they even found it interesting to see their own habits written out.

Tell me what you think!

Party People

This weekend Bry and I had our first big housewarming party. Given we are in the holiday season, we kept it festive and went with a fondue and Christmas sweater theme.  It was a major hit and hilarious to see people’s get ups as they walked into our apartment.  Bry has always had a vision of having a fondue party (His family has a unique affinity to fondue… which I don’t hate.) and it was great to see it in action.  Three fondue pots, 2 buckets of hotty toddies and a keg later… well I would say it was a success.  Here are some highlights from the night (apologies for the terrible photos)!

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset Processed with VSCOcam with g3 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with m5 preset Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

We served chips, guacamole and salsa, red and green M&Ms, homemade chocolate chip cookies and of course, fondue with baguette pieces, apples and pepperoni for dipping.  For drinks we made a bucket of hot toddy which was cider and whiskey (something Bry is becoming infamous for…) and a keg of PBR (keepin’ is classy).  Everyone was so generous and brought bottle upon bottle of wine, which we didn’t really get around to drinking… probably for the better.  One friend even brought homemade egg nog, which I don’t think I have ever had and wow, is it good!  I must say, much better than that bottled nonsense!

As the soiree concluded and people started dispersing, the rest of us (only the strong survive!) headed to a local karaoke bar which ended the evening on quite an entertaining note.  I have videos to prove it (sorry guys)…

We couldn’t have asked for a better night or group of people to break bread, eat fondue, drink cider, celebrate a BFFs birthday, admire our Christmas tree, get chatty and embrace our new home with!  Hope everyone is having a merry holiday season and I would highly recommend the fondue party idea!  There’s nothing like cheese and good friends!

Social Experiment: Weekday Eating

whole foods checkout

Are you like me and peep into other people’s Whole Foods baskets during checkout?  Come on, just come clean with it.  (And if not, don’t judge me please.) Call me crazy, but there’s something interesting about learning what other people eat.  I am definitely a food lover myself, but I think foodie or not, people are curious when it comes to others eating habits.  I love talking to people about what they’re having for dinner, and I notice it tends to come up a lot when conversing with family and friends.  One of my best friends always jokes that her fiance texts her detailed messages about what he’s eating for lunch, expecting the “favor” be reciprocated.  Which cracks me up, but also makes me love them even more – isn’t that hilarious!?  So, as a little experiment I asked some friends to log what they eat for a week (Mon. – Fri.), myself included.  I’ve always assumed I eat somewhat healthy and often more than most, but I can’t wait to sneak a peek inside others “baskets” and hopefully get some new dinner ideas (wink, wink).

I am keeping everyone anonymous, because it can be a bit personal for some, and I will share what I’ve found in the next few weeks!  Next week, we will take a look at the girls and the following week, we will look at the boys!  Are you as excited as I am?!

Happy Monday after a long weekend…. ughhhhh.

Summer Series: BACK to ACK!

What started as long weekend visits in high-school, developed into entire summers in college and has now become an annual tradition for a week each summer (OHHH the “real world”) – the annual Nantucket trip.  Because my girlfriends and I are somewhat neurotic when it comes to planning, we usually lock down the house around Christmas for our yearly summer extravaganza.  This involves a group of girls (it’s run anywhere from 16 to 6) renting a house and a jeep for a week of beaching, mudslides and al fresco dining… basically my idea of heaven.  Here are some pictures from this year’s trip…

IMG_3725

One of my faves…Steps Beach!

IMG_3730

Gazebo Mudslides…a must.

IMG_3753

Oysters & cocktails at the brewery. Pure heaven.

Cru – can’t decide what was better, the food or the decor.

IMG_3819

IMG_3812

IMG_3816

IMG_3724

IMG_3722 IMG_3729 IMG_3755IMG_3758 IMG_3828 IMG_3835 IMG_3887 IMG_3868 IMG_3869

And here’s my ideal week or weekend activity list for your next Nantucket excursion…

Upon arrival it’s mandatory to kick things off with a mudslide at the Gazebo,

[the next morning] Pick up a hazelnut iced coffee from Espresso to Go,

Eat a turkey sandy (with cucumber, lettuce, tomato & sprouts…yep.) from Something Natural,

Grab your backpack beach chairs and some refreshments and head on down to Steps Beach,

When you’re sick of the sun (never happens to me but…) grab some snacks from Bartlett and spend your afternoon at Cisco Brewery (Try the blueberry lemonade.),

Take an amazing post beach shower (Does anything beat that feeling?)

Then head to Madaket for sunset and a casual dinner a Milly’s

or if you’re feeling fancy get a sunset cocktail at The Galley followed by dinner at Straight Wharf,

A post dinner drink at Slip14,

And since you’re likely ready to dance at this point… head on down to the Chicken Box for some good clean fun.

Ok, now I’m missing summer already!  But the good news is… tomorrow’s FRIDAY!  Here’s a little treat to get you through…

One more day!

Summer Series: Mahtha’s Vineyahd – Holla back!

Get’s me every time!

Growing up I would go to the Vineyard with my family for a week or two every summer and it was always the trip I looked forward to most.  My mom grew up spending her whole summer out there in her family’s house in Oak Bluffs (which they sadly sold years ago).  So it’s cool to think about how long my mom’s been going out there and how much change she has seen over her lifetime of Vineyard summers.  If you are human, you have seen Jaws, which was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard and is barely recognizable compared to what it looks like now.  So much land has been developed since the movie was filmed there, but it still has that New England island charm.  This summer, with the purchase of my new bike (!), Bry and I decided to do a cool 45 mile excursion around the island, which is something I have never done before.  Not sure how we imagined it being easy, but that’s a story for another day.  I honestly felt the same way I did after finishing a marathon.  Cramping and shaky.  But totally worth it, I swear!  And of course we rode directly to the Black Dog for breakfast, which tasted better than ever.  Check out some of the photos from the weekend!

I’m such a dork.

My cute neighbor.

IMG_3582

We did it! And that little orange speck in the distance is Bry.

IMG_3584

Contemplating life or trying to catch his breath from the bike? (Note the mismatched socks.)

IMG_3585

Clay cliffs at Gay Head. A must see!

IMG_3599

A well deserved cocktail…

IMG_3597

Happy not to be biking anymore.

IMG_3596

…and the view from our rocking chairs. Ahhh.

IMG_3602

Just another cute house in Edgartown.

IMG_3603

Moody day in Menemsha.

Such fun times!  And if you want my opinion on an ideal weekend in the Vineyard, read on…

Pick up an iced coffee at Mocha Motts,

Get brunch at The Black Dog,

Ride a wave and read a book at South Beach,

Take a ride out to Menemsha and eat a lobster roll,

or BYO at Homeport,

Jump “the bridge”,

Get a post beach (or dinner) rum punch at Seafood Shanty,

Eat dinner at Chesca’s,

Order black raspberry icecream from Mad Martha’s,

And last but not least…

Sip a cocktail, porch-side, at the Harbor View.

More summer adventure montages to come!

Easy healthy dinner: Salmon and Crispy Kale

Ok, so I am just as guilty as anyone in the fact that I get takeout way too often and have definitely been in hibernation mode lately. (It’s just winter weight, right?…)  But when I promise myself [on a weekly basis] that I will cook more to save money and eat healthier, I usually muster up the energy to actually make a healthy meal.  One easy solution for anyone facing these same hardships is this super easy, simple and healthy dinner below…

Salmon with Crispy Kale and Quinoa

glazedsalmonfillet

Ingredients (for one):

4 oz fresh salmon filet

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

2 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon maple syrup

1 bunch of kale

2-3 tablespoons olive oil

salt & pepper

1/2 cup quinoa

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.  Marinate salmon in mustard, soy sauce and maple syrup and put to the side.  Depending on the quinoa used [follow box instructions], pour 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup quinoa in a pot and boil for 10-15 minutes until water is absorbed.  Wash and dry kale and cut out stems and rip into large pieces.  Place kale in large mixing bowl and rub with olive oil, then sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Once kale is “marinated” spread out on cookie sheet (if not a non-stick, cover pan in tinfoil) and place in oven.  Cook until browning and crisping occurs – about 10 minutes, flip kale and then cook another 10 minutes on the other side.  Once kale is done, place salmon in oven and cook for 15 minutes.  Once salmon is cooked through, quinoa is ready and kale is crisped, season with salt and pepper (if preferred) and serve! See? Easy!

What are your go-to recipes during the work week (or otherwise)?  I would love more ideas on quick, easy and healthy dinners!

XOXO
Meg

PS – Crispy kale is a great alternative to salty foods like potato chips or french fries… for anyone else out there with a salt problem.

A DAY IN MARY KATE’S LIFE

8:00am – Wake up…

8:00am-8:25am – “Get out of bed, sometimes it takes a while with this big ol’ belly!”; Products: “I am a product freak!! I love creams, I take after my Mom!  Guinot is my favorite brand.  I love the face wash it’s smells good and makes your skin so smooth- I follow it with Guinot toner and then Guinot bioxygene moisturizer – simply fantastic!”  CeraVe moisturizer for my body (“they make an am/pm cream for the face too”), Vaseline aloe fresh moisturizing body gel,  Neutrogena oil-free eye makeup remover, Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner, NARS tinted moisturizer, Pantene Pro-V “for shampoo and conditioner but I change it up every time”, Dove body wash “right now but again I change my body wash up every time I go to the store too – much more fun that way new bottles and new scents they all seem to do the same for my hair and skin”, Venus razors

8:30am-9:30am – Go downstairs, “Ryan will usually make me breakfast unless I make cereal, I am going to miss that when he deploys :( We discuss what task is on the agenda for the day.  We are currently dealing with heat issues.  We are getting a whole new system Feb 7th they have to tear up the ceiling in the basement that we just redid!”

9:30am-10:30am – “I used to go to SoulCycle every Tuesday/Thursday at this time but at 36 weeks I had to stop – SoulCycle ROCKS but the ab work out part was getting too difficult with my bump – I’m proud I made it so far…so I try to walk or do something physical during this time – Wednesday/Friday I go to my trainer at this point I just go to get my blood flowing and see if I can squat this baby out!  I tried to keep in shape this pregnancy – they say it’s good for the baby, it makes labor easier and it helps you take the weight off quicker after you give birth- we shall see!”

11:00am-12:00pm – “Shower after my workout or run errands for whatever it is we are doing for the day.  Lately it has just been organizing the house (who knew how long this would take?), getting our paperwork squared away, washing the baby clothes, setting up baby things and trying to get our life squared away before Ryan leaves and we have our sweet baby!  We have furniture delivered almost everyday, it’s so fun and exciting.  Since we just moved and unpacked (mostly) we move things around ALL the time still – it’s like a game figuring out where everything should go!”

12:30pm – Lunch “It’s so nice to have Ryan home to share this time before he deploys we have really been able to enjoy each others company before the baby arrives!”

1:00pm-6:30pm – Finish up work for the day and run errands, “My Mom and I are always out buying something for the house while Ryan is home doing the handyman work! Sometimes I sneak in a nap – not as often as I should be at this point – there is just so much I can be doing!  Being pregnant is funny it’s the kind of tired that you physically CANNOT keep your eyes open even if you try, at least not me!”

7:00pm – “Plan on what to do for dinner!  I feel bad I haven’t cooked in the new house yet.  I’m getting used to Ryan cooking for me…going to be a hard habit to break!”

8:00pm –  Watch TV with Ryan; check bills and e-mails and do the dishes or laundry

9:30pm/10:00pm – Bed; “I take my prenatal vitamins, I bring up two bottles of water for my bedside – I am so thirsty at night! I use my Guinot products or Neutrogena towelettes (if it’s a lazy night) and brush my teeth!  I usually do not fall asleep until 11 or 12 baby Miller just sits on my bladder so I am up almost every hour at night, not as easy to sleep anymore – turning from side to side is a project! ”

Thanks Mary Kate!  Again, so many new products I haven’t heard of!   It is such an exciting time and so amazing to hear about all of the prep that goes into having a baby.  MK is one of an incredible family of 5 kids with more extended family than I can keep track of!  Baby Miller will be loved by so many and we can’t wait to see if it’s a boy or a girl!  In fact, MK has agreed to do another day in the life post-baby!  It will be so fun to compare schedules pre and post baby!

XOXO

A Day in Molly’s Life:

5:15am-5:35am – Wake Up; “I put my cell phone alarm on loud and it has to be across the room from me to make sure I actually get out of bed to turn it off. Get my gym clothes on. Brush my teeth quick and have some multivitamins – Vitafusion Multivites Gummy Vitamins and allergy pills because I get sinus infections at the drop of a hat.”

5:40am-6:30am – “Go down to the gym in my building and start to wake up by turning the speed up on the treadmill.”

6:30am-7:00am – “Shower and get dressed as quickly as I can. I have to lay out my clothes the night before so it speeds up the process a little bit. I usually wear a suit or a dress everyday. Not many ways to make a suit look “cute” and could never quite figure out how the J. Crew models made it look so fashionable in the catalogues.”

Products: “I love any and all product and I usually have a lot of things in my rotation but my most recent obsession is my Clarisonic that I got for Christmas – I have never had such clear and smooth skin. I usually do it once or twice a day depending on if I have charged it the night before but its my favorite and I would recommend it to everyone!  In the shower I use Biolage shampoo and conditioner but I like to buy small bottles because I like switching up the brand.  In my opinion the best body wash is Aveeno body wash in “calming lavender”.  Neutrogena naturals fresh cleaning and make up remover (in the morning) and Trish McEvoy face wash (at night).  Also swear by Ole Henriksen “Ultimate Eye Lift Eye Gel Roll on“, Ole Henriksen, “Truth Serum” and Origins “A Perfect World“. I switch up my body cream daily, but some of my favorites are: Laura Mercier in “Fresh Fig“, Clarins “Moisture Rich Body Lotion“.

7:05am –  “Head out the door to grab the 1 Train to the 2 Train and then either the PATH to Exchange Place or the Ferry from World Financial Center to Paula’s Hook. I’ve been taking the ferry lately because its been such a nice way to start the day on a boat. Usually grab an iced coffee at a place along the way and maybe a veggie drink if I really need to wake up.”

8:00am – “Sit down at my desk – we don’t have assigned seats at work so I try to switch it up and pick a new seat every day.”

8:00am-8:25am – “I eat breakfast at my desk – usually a yogurt from home and I check emails.”

8:30am-9:30am – Internal Meeting

9:30am-10:30am – Check emails

11:00am-12:00pm – “Jump back on the ferry to Manhattan for a meeting at one of our properties to discuss marketing and PR opportunities.”

12:30pm – “Head back to Jersey City and pick a new seat again…”

12:45pm-1:00pm – “Go down to the cafeteria and grab a salad and go back up and eat at my desk.”

1:00pm-6:30/7:00pm – “Respond to emails and usually have a couple smaller internal meetings or conference calls.”

7:00pm – “Head home and pick up something for dinner along the way.”

8:00pm – “Get home eat, watch NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams”

9:30pm/10:00pm – HIT THE HAY; “Before bed I usually put on Ole Henriksen “Truth Serum” I also like Lancome “Genefique” serum and before bed and in the winter months twice a week I will put on Origins “Drink Up Intensive“, L’Occitane hand cream “Mango flower“, Carmax lip balm, and Ole Henriksen “Ultimate Eye Lift“.  In Sephora I typically gravitate to any product that says “lift, tighten or smooth”.” – AMEN SISTER!

Thanks Mol!  Now I realize why we are such good friends… product obsessed and Mexican food lovers.  Even after living with you for so many years, I still find this interesting!  I love your tendency to mix things up.  After all, change leads to happiness!  (Has anyone seen the Happy Movie? So good!)  Even things as little as mixing up moisturizer is something worth trying!  Do it peops!  Also, I must say, for all of you thinking What?! She’s up at 5:30am everyday to workout? Mol is one of the most disciplined people I have ever known and is definitely a great example for the rest of us!  As Ben Franklin puts it, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a [wo]man healthy, wealthy and wise.”  I need to start repeating that one in the morning as I hit snooze

How was everyone’s weekends?!  This is my last week as a 26 year old and I can’t really believe it!

XOXO
